Why are there weight limits for tandem skydiving?

When it comes to skydiving airplanes, size really does matter. Unlike commercial jets, skydiving aircraft are smaller and carefully balanced. Every seat—or “slot”—on the plane plays a role in keeping the aircraft operating safely. A full plane is perfectly normal, but overall weight and balance still have to stay within strict limits. That’s why individual weight restrictions are sometimes necessary—it helps ensure every flight is smooth, safe, and right on target.

Parachute systems also have their own limits. Even though the gear is incredibly well designed and built to handle serious forces, it still has to strike a balance between strength and size. Since the parachute system is worn like a backpack, it can’t be oversized, but it does need to safely support the person using it. Manufacturers set clear weight ranges to make sure the equipment performs exactly as intended and stays in top condition through regular use. Staying within those limits helps keep the gear reliable for everyone.

Its about teamwork

Tandem skydiving is all about teamwork. You and your instructor work together as a single unit, and your combined weight needs to fall within safe operating ranges. Beyond safety, comfort matters too. Skydiving planes are cozy, and getting in and out should feel exciting—not awkward or stressful.

The goal is for you to enjoy every part of the experience, from climbing aboard to landing with a huge smile on your face.
